Having been in marketing for over 10 years and last year undertaking business mentoring with one of the best small business programs in Australia, I’ve learnt a thing or two about what works and what doesn’t. The most important thing I’ve learnt is that change is constant and you have to keep up. 

Another thing I’ve learnt is that one size DOES NOT fit all! Every business has very different needs, resources and budgets. Its vital to ensure you are doing the RIGHT things for YOU!

Here are my top tips for things you absolutely must DO to get the best possible return on your marketing this year:

START WITH STRATEGY
To ensure you have a clear vision, maintain focus, implement what’s needed and get results, you need a strategy. I can’t stress this enough. Taking the time to really get clear on what you want and understanding how you can get it is key to everything you do. Working with a consultant can help you with advice, tips and tools to really take it to the next level.

BE ACCOUNTABLE TO YOUR PLAN
Once you are clear on what needs to happen, your plan must be implemented! Too often I see businesses lose momentum and things don’t get done. You need some accountability to ensure that you keep moving forward.

SET A REALISTIC BUDGET
One of the biggest mistakes I see businesses make is not having a marketing budget. Having a clear strategy will give you an indication of what you will need to put aside to make things happen. Get some advice from your accountant and/or marketing consultant of how much you’ll need to invest to grow your business.

BE OPEN AND FLEXIBLE TO CHANGE
Marketing and technology is changing at a rapid rate. There are new ways of connecting with your customers every day. Getting advice and guidance from those in the know who are working in marketing on a daily basis can really pay off. If you are not sure, outsource, rather than stick your head in the sand.

INVESTIGATE NEW TECHNOLOGY 
There are SO many cool tools around to help you work smarter. Automated systems, project management tools, accounting software, CRM systems, scheduling tools – there are hundreds of different options. Now this can be overwhelming and time consuming, especially if you don’t know what you don’t know! Another great reason to work with a consultant who can recommend the best option for your unique needs. The right technology can radically save you time and money.

GET SOME HELP
You don’t know what you don’t know, so getting help from someone who does know, can seriously change your life! Its one of the things I love most about what I do. To see the stress and worry drain away when they realise there is another way to do things is so rewarding for me. Just 1 hour CAN change things. If you feel stuck, get some help, new ideas and an injection of motivation to get moving again.

STAY INFORMED
One of the best ways to find out what’s going on in marketing is to follow a few key pages on social media. That’s how I keep up to date. Allocate some time each week to find out the latest trends and what’s working/not working. If you’re up to speed you’ll know that Social Media, Videos and Content Marketing are the key things you need to focus on this year. Staying informed (and ahead of your competition) can really pay off.

GET THE RIGHT PERSON FOR THE JOB
If you’re not interested or don’t have time to do what needs to be done, then you need to delegate. Whether its someone on your team or outsourcing it. You can not afford NOT to do it. Make sure they are great at it – your business depends on it.

EVERYTHING IS MARKETING
Everything you do in your business is marketing. From how you greet customers to the signage to your font. Everything is communication and branding. Take some time to review everything you do and ensure it’s giving the message you intend it to. And that its speaking to the people you want as customers.
